Rain On Fire 04:27
RAIN ON FIRE © KYM PITMAN Let’s go walking out the back of time I’ll rest on your shoulder - you can cry on mine Stories pouring down like rain on fire Big mother eagle I’ve got your blood in my veins I breathe in your slipstream and drink the same rain Stories pouring down like rain on fire Something new might grow here. Parched earth under my feet Bleached bones and discarded leaf There’s no chariot to give you a ride Just stepping stones to the other side Grandmothers in sacred places Women weeping leaving traces In pools of beauty their grief displaces And the over flow Waters the land Feeds the land Giving love to the land So something old can grow here Finding your balance on the slither of a moon Blistering heat and lazy afternoon Building a bridge in your heart between worlds Heavens unveiled all the way to the water Putting stars in your eyes and hope in your hands Stories pouring down like rain on the fire So something old might grow here. Grandmothers in sacred places Women weeping leaving traces In pools of beauty their grief displaces And the over flow Waters the land Feeds the land Giving love Grandmothers in sacred places Women weeping leaving traces In pools of beauty their grief displaces And the overflow Waters the land Feeds the land Giving love to the land So something ancient can grow here.

Flood 03:20
The flood © Kym Pitman The floods closing in we’re bailed up inside Only the heavens open water’s deep and wide This old shack might float away it’s a mighty swollen river So I’m holding you close tonight There’s a stranger in the storm sweeping up the deadwood While the past sheds its skin to the distant churning sea Nothing can hold the river back while she’s longing like a lover So I’m holding you close tonight I’m holding you close Holding you close tonight When the darkness is all spent and the old sun dares to rise And casts his golden spears onto the remnants of our lives Strewn across the fences like clothes across the floor It won’t be long till we forget the way it was before So I’m holding you close Holding you close Holding you close tonight

The Lovers 04:34
THE LOVERS © KYM PITMAN Half way up a trail between the water and the sky Two old lovers looking out through each other’s eyes You blur the line we’ve drawn to keep us each apart Silent at your feet we steal into your heart of hearts Making love through sun and rain Bring us to our knees And take us deeper You strip us back to sapwood disarm us to the core You could spare the world from hopeless greed and devastating war Making love through sun and rain Bring us to our knees And take us deeper... So we see through your eyes Know the harmonies you sing Be one with the other Feel the peace it brings May we see through your eyes Know the harmonies you sing Be one with the other Feel the peace it brings Half way up a trail between the water and the sky Two old lovers looking out through each other eyes One with the other…. through each other’s eyes

On Your Name 03:52
On Your Name © Kym Pitman She was just a kid - needed her old man And trusted you - to understand Why did you make it - so she couldn’t fly And there’s always shame - now it’s on your name First time she saw you - you looked like her old man Could have been your hair - seemed you’d understand Why did you make it - so she couldn’t fly And there’s always shame - now it’s on your name When you went home - what did you say To your wife and daughter - about your day Did you tell, did you tell them you made it - so she couldn’t fly But you felt no shame - now it’s on your name Here’s a story that couldn’t be told Not friends or family - but too big to hold Still she carried it always - through dark dark nights So love wouldn’t find her - could never be alright Why did you make it - so she couldn’t fly And there’s always shame - now it’s on your name She was just a kid - needed her old man And trusted you - to understand

Carrikalinga Kym Pitman © Fishing and drifting under Tjilbruke skies The red and the gold light swims in your eyes The heat of December wind in your sails It’s the breath of old dreamers on the Tjilbruke trail Young Kaurna girl stood here Abalone in her hand And I know she’s dreaming right here where we stand There’s glass coming in now silencing the wind And sparkling water on dry salty skin We come back we come back we come back Wishes and promises on stones Mumma kissed in the sea They’ll come back on some high tide just like you and me Back with the Gannet and the albatross with the storms of July Back with the old north wind so hot and dry We come back we come back we come back To stand in the water that old sun going down Sisters and brothers new year coming round And that glassy glassy water now silencing the wind Between the breath of old dreamers tide’s coming in We come back we come back we come back

Love Song 03:27
Love song © Kym Pitman I fell in love with the north wind at my side Singing hot in my hair With a taste of the desert on my skin Ooo … iy … eh Ooo … iy … eh I fell in love with the salty south sea in my eyes Kissing cool on my breast And whispering at night on my tongue Ooo … iy … eh Ooo … iy … eh You fell in love with the eastern range in your sky Holding you strong Like an old cedar standing naked in the rain You fell in love with the western sun on your fingers Tracing the light With the flesh of colour slipping away Where the eastern range meets the Ole North wind And the Western sun meets the southern seas You’ll find me there Where the southern sea meets the eastern range And the ole north wind meets the western sun I’ll find you Ooo … iy … eh

Silver Spoon 04:46
Silver Spoon © Kym Pitman Born to the mist like his fathers before Making shoes for the rich with hides of the poor A young wife and children and the wolf’s at the door It’s harsh and its hungry no thanks to the law His time came too soon He took just one silver spoon Through wild desperate waters and there’s no sky above When you’re tied down below leaving all that you love Sentenced to life now in Van Demons Land To be tortured and chained by the same brutal hand Some nights the quiet moon Shines like a silver spoon And sweet Caroline you stand by the water In my troubled mind And I can’t turn the boat around Can’t turn the boat around When they’d stolen his spirit they took off his chains Pardoned his theft on condition he stayed This strange place was home now to a free broken man As the bounty sailed on to the great southern land With her face pale as the moon Cold like a silver spoon And sweet Mary-Anne old Irelands fair daughter Take these rough hands Maybe help turn the boat around Help turn the boat around On the land of the serpent, dreaming time They made love to each other making new blood new lines I am a daughter now of this land Where deep native waters met oceans of sand Some nights the quiet moon Shines like that silver spoon And sweet Caroline you stand by the water Like a ghost in my mind As the boats keep on sailing in We can’t turn the boats around No we can’t turn the boats around

Bigger picture © Kym Pitman Your daddy’s gone where the grass is greener Your daddy’s gone he says the grass is green there Your daddy’s gone …left his fields a-burning But hey sister There’s a bigger picture No don’t you cry… Your Mumma wails now like a broken bird Your Mumma's wailing like her wings are broken Your Mumma wails like a broken bird But hey sister There’s a bigger picture No don’t you cry… The devil stole your sweet young heart That devil stole your precious heart The devil stole your sweet young heart But hey sister There’s a bigger picture No don’t you cry… for a more perfect world When those dark old nights… come closing in Time is still a friend …Stays with you ‘til the very end And he’ll go with you now to where those fields are burning There you can leave those broken wings Steal your heart back from the devil And stand tall sister in the bigger picture No don’t you cry No don’t you cry … for a more perfect world

Right before our eyes © Kym Pitman I watch the falling rain - everywhere I see Changing the course of the river Right before my eyes Shifting stone and shifting sand It’s washed out my crossing and taken my land Should I leave now, should I wait it out Land grows tired and parched - wind tears at my life Changing the way of country Right before our eyes Sun bleached bones and lifting soil Turn the sky to dust - all our work our toil Should we leave now, should we wait it out If it’s not flood its drought Fire roars from hell - steals the summer sky Changing the meaning of Christmas Right before our eyes And those who can - flee burning dreams This great grey land - not as it seemed Should we leave now - should we fight it out If it’s not flood its fire and drought Can we find a way - sort this out We’ve still got time but it’s running out The heat’s getting hotter - wet’s getting wetter – The South’s getting drier - sea’s coming higher Ice is getting thinner - there’s no winners now Here at the mercy of the land We’ve gotta move together like shifting sand And find a way to work it out - see what we can do without Find a way all together For our children For their children and their children and their children’s children…... For the creatures - the forest - flowers - rivers and the oceans For the stories and a thousand generations dancing this land For the wildness - glaciers - reefs - the beauty For the colours and the wonder - love and a sense of peace on earth For the children

Wild River 04:51
Wild River © Kym Pitman Time comes ‘round like it always does Then we shine bright like the stars So take my hand - walk home with me Like dust to that old desert - like rain falling to the sea Run wild river run You’re the only one just keeps on living no matter what else has fallen Sing your song like you always do You sing right inside of us and we’ll sing along beside you And hand in hand you walk me home While you keep singing wild river we’ll never be alone Run wild river run You’re the only one just keeps on living no matter what else has fallen And hand in hand you walk me home You keep singing wild river with the stars You’re the only one just keeps on living Keep on living

Impermanence 04:26
IMPERMANENCE © KYM PITMAN Impermanence is looking through my eyes I’m Walking through the shopping centre dressed in some disguise Searching hard for things to own so I don’t have to be alone And there’ll be things that I can hold on to Oh but when this paint wears off And these fancy rags turn to ragged cloth Impermanence parades in faded colours Like a veil between two worlds Oh so fine Knows not time Falling like leaves Fermenting sweet like wine Unfolding from the earth just like a ghost gum strong and tall There’s times you see it face to face and times it’s hardly there at all Beauty of the earth threatened by madness and despair And the weariness of things to do - to have -to own - to want - to lose While impermanence is weeping from our eyes Tears of salty rivers running dry Transience of simple things take me home on stirring wind On song of bird - on pretty stone…light on water Like a veil between two worlds Oh so fine Knows not time Formless as the love inside us With presence we’ll not be divided Unfolding from the earth just like a forest strong and tall There’s times you see it face to face and times it’s hardly there at all May we learn to love how this place unites the grace that we have in us all

Deep Water 03:40
DEEP WATER © Kym Pitman When a child comes to you Like Jesus said Would you give him a stone when he’s asking you for bread And when a man stumbles ashore with only sweat upon his skin Would you take him to an island - build a cage and fence him in Rub salt in his wounds - send him back out to deep water There’s a woman on the news, war etched into her face Lines of fear and grief - she’s been degraded and displaced And the face behind the wire - could be anyone What if it was your grandchild - your mother or your son Rub salt in their wounds - send them back out to deep water oooh We used to welcome strangers - sleep them closest to the hearth Keep them safe from danger - now it’s hardened in our hearts You can feel the nation tremble - you can smell the nations fear When strangers cry for refuge - say no - you can’t stay here. Our pity is forbidden and their sufferings denied We’re not allowed to see them now - out of sight and out of mind They can just sink or swim - now they’re back out in - deep water oooh And what of moral obligation - decency and fairness Mercy and compassion - dignity - awareness So turn back your heart Sir - while still there may be time Denying our humanity don’t make for peace of mind oooh

Waking Up 04:51

about

I acknowledge the Gumbaynggirr people as the traditional custodians of the land where this album was written and recorded. I pay my respects to both the Gumbaynggirr and Kaurna elders’ past, present, and emerging. I walk this land with respect for all life and understand that every part of the earth is sacred.

I give thanks to the delicate and poignant places of the heart. In these extraordinary times for the earth and all her inhabitants, I am humbled by the spirit of song and her alchemy of place, story, poetry, music and celebration. I attempt to articulate the fragile places between adversity and tenderness, the transformation of grief into beauty, suffering into hope and complacency into action.
The making of this album has unravelled its own curious story. It has travelled a tireless path between bushfires, lockdowns and floods amidst a changing world. It has been rich with connection and inspiration and steadfast in resilience, patience and love.
